Dracula began with the Dracula Novel by Irish author Bram Stoker which was the hardback published in 1897 by Archibald Constable and Co. The primary antagonist was the now famous vampire and inspiration for many novels and films since Count Dracula. Amazingly the Dracula Novel was attributed to several literary genres such as vampire literature, horror fiction, gothic novel and invasion literature. Bram Stoker’s Dracula Novel is structured in such as way that it is written as a series of letters, diary entries and ship logs style.

The Dracula Novel deals with many themes such as the role of women in Victorian culture, conventional and conservative sexuality, folklore, immigration, post colonialism and colonialism. Stoker did not invent the vampire but the novels influence had great effect on the popularity of them.

The Daily Mail ranked Bram Stoker’s writing higher than Mary Shelley, Edgar Allan Poe and Emily Bronte. As with many things it wasn’t until modern day that the Dracula Novel got full recognition and popularity, Victorian readers saw it more of an adventure story with 20th century movies being the real cause of increased popularity.
