History of the Jack O Lanterns

Pumpkins were originally carved to keep away evil spirits on the night of Halloween. Usually a scary face is cut out and a candle is placed inside so that the face glows throughout the night. This tradition started in Scotland Ireland; however they would use turnips and place them on their doorsteps. When the tradition moved to the US, pumpkins were used because they were the most available vegetables and were easier to carve. We now use Jack O Lanterns to decorate our homes and to attract trick or treaters.
