The Legend of Sleepy Hollow
There was a place named Sleep Hollow just off the eastern shore of Hudson River. The people who lived there saw strange things and heard weird noises. Sleepy Hollow was said to be haunted by the spirit of a headless man riding his horse.
Ichabod Crane was a tall young teacher who taught in a nearby school house on top of a hill in Sleepy Hollow. He fell in love with a beautiful music student named Katrina Van Tassel. However the school bully, Brom Bones was also interested in Katrina and Ichabod was frightened of his big muscles and broad shoulders. Everyone feared Brom but Ichabod was determined to win Katrina’s heart. Brom became very jealous when he found out Ichabod and Katrina were courting and started to play practical jokes on the teacher.
One afternoon, a messenger arrived to Ichabod’s house with an invitation to a party at the Van Tassels. Ichabod was filled with excitement and let his students leave an hour earlier so that he could find something to wear. Later that evening, Ichabod rode to the party on his horse Daredevil and confidently walked into he party asking Katrina to dance. In the corner of the room were Brom and his friends telling ghost stories about the headless man. Even though Ichabod had heard this story before he started to worry when he heard the whistling wind and thunder.
The clock struck midnight and Ichabod decided to leave, his heart started to pound and his mouth became dry. He began to make his way home until he saw a headless rider holding a glowing pumpkin head. Ichabod panicked and rode off, the branches hit against his chest and the wind rustled through his hair. The headless shadow got closer and closer; Ichabod made a sharp left and rode off into the distance. No one knows for sure if it was Brom or the actual ghost of the headless horseman but Ichabod never returned to Sleepy Hollow.
